Amy couldn’t believe she wasn’t sore. After all that ‘bonding,’ she shouldn’t be able to walk in a straight line. But she felt invigorated, her body filled with energy. She would use it to deal with whatever came next, to sort through whatever Dorn still needed to tell her and face it together. The door slid open just as she was pulling down her shirt. She turned around and felt the blood drain from her face.

Okay, maybe she wasn’t ready to face this.

Buddy rushed into the room, wearing one of the silver catsuit space uniforms. Amy would have laughed, except his expression was so filled with concern, she didn’t have the heart to tease him about it. Yet.

“Oh my God, Amy,” he said. “Are you okay?”

He pulled her into a huge hug. For some reason, her eyes filled with tears. This was her big brother. He had always made her feel safe enough to let down her guard, but she didn’t want to do so in front of Dorn. Sniffing, she pushed away from Buddy and stepped back.

“I’m fine,” Amy said.

“Fine?” Buddy’s eyebrows rose over his steel-gray eyes. He turned his attention to Dorn, fury building in his expression. “Word is that you faced Dorn in combat. Combat.”

“And kicked his ass,” she added, smirking.

Buddy acted as if he didn’t hear her. “What the fuck were you thinking, man? She just came out of stasis after that blaster wound. She needs to be resting.”

“It’s okay,” Amy said.

“Okay?” Buddy turned back to her, his gray eyes cold with rage. She had never seen him look at her that way before. Other people, yeah, but never her. A chill of misgiving ran down her spine. “Do you know what it means when you challenge a Cygnian to combat and win?”

“I do now,” Amy said.

“Amy has accepted our union,” Dorn said. “She is my soulmate.”

“Soulmate.” Buddy ran his hand over his face and shook his head. “I’m sick of you guys and your soulmate garbage.”

“Hey.” Amy couldn’t believe how much she was bristling when only an hour or so ago she would have been agreeing with Buddy. “It’s not garbage. It’s true.”

Buddy’s eyebrows hiked up again. “Really? You’re buying into this party line now?”

“Buddy…” she began.

“No, no,” Buddy said. “This is good. Since he’s explained everything and all, I’m sure he’s told you all the other important stuff. Like that Sophie has been permanently altered with some sort of freaky electrical powers because of bonding with Lar. Dorn here, he told you that, right?”

Now was probably not the best time to tell Buddy that Amy had been altered as well, though she wasn’t sure it had anything to do with Dorn. When her brother was this worked up, it was hard to derail him until he hit someone, and if he went for Dorn, Buddy would probably break his hand.

“Dorn has told me the most important stuff,” Amy said. “I’m going into this with open eyes.”

“The most important stuff?” Buddy nodded, but she could tell he was building up to something.
